The Nicolas Sursock Museum in Achrafieh, Beirut, is one of Lebanon’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Built in 1912 as the private villa of art collector Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock, the building blends Ottoman and Venetian architectural styles and originally sat among the grand palaces of Rue Sursock. Upon his death in 1952, Sursock bequeathed the villa to the city to be transformed into a museum, which officially opened in 1961 as a center for modern and contemporary art.
The museum quickly became a leading cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, building a significant collection, and promoting Lebanese artists. In the 2000s, it underwent a major renovation and expansion, reopening in 2015 with underground galleries, a library, an auditorium, and restored interiors, carefully preserving the historic façade.
The Beirut Port explosion in 2020 severely damaged the museum, destroying stained-glass windows, wooden ceilings, and dozens of artworks. A large international restoration effort followed, led by UNESCO and global donors.
In May 2023, the museum reopened once again, symbolizing Beirut’s resilience. Today, it stands as an architectural treasure, a custodian of Lebanese art, and a testament to the city’s enduring cultural spirit.
